Avoiding Cliches

"Beware of the bits that seem to write themselves"

-Jean O'Brien

(from an excellent piece by Steve Moran at The Willesden Herald detailing common slip-ups in short story writing - a must read before submitting your next short story!)

  1. I love this. When I'm teaching workshops, I often find that in timed writing tasks, the first five minutes of writing might be the writing that comes the easiest - but it is also the most clichéd and the least original. It's almost like we've got to get rid of all that stuff through drafts, or writing prompts, to clear the tank so we can dig down to the better stuff though... or at least that's the way it works for me.

  2. So true Jenn, I feel the same way about my own writing.
